Seven nights gives you time to experience two very different islands without making every day a transfer. This itinerary divides the stay into four nights on Rarotonga and three on Aitutaki. It spans eight calendar days if you fly back after the seventh night. The sample starts on a Thursday so Day 3 is Saturday market day; shift the order if your dates differ, and book domestic flights and activities around confirmed schedules.

Choose your bases

On Rarotonga, Pacific Resort Rarotonga is a boutique resort with rooms, suites and villas beside the beach. Where: Ngatangiia. Muri Beach Club Hotel is an adults-only beachfront option beside Muri Lagoon. Where: Ngatangiia. Choose one as your four-night base rather than changing hotels mid-stay.

For Aitutaki, Ranginuis Retreat has beachfront bungalows and garden units on Ootu Beach, plus kayaks and a tour desk according to its listing. Where: Arutanga. It is one possible base for three nights; check the current room options and transfer arrangements directly.

Days 1–4: Rarotonga

Day 1: Arrive and find your rhythm

Morning: Arrive, check in and keep the first hours open. If your arrival time leaves a free half-day, the Rarotonga Orientation & Sightseeing Tour introduces historical sites, cultural landmarks and other points of interest around the island. Where: Arorangi. Confirm the day and pickup details with the operator.

Afternoon: Take a short swim or settle in. For an easy meal in town, The Lucky Rooster Eatery serves breakfast and lunch, with meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan choices in its listing. Where: Avarua.

Evening: Keep dinner simple and get an early night if you need it. Save the longer outings for the next days.

Day 2: Lagoon and coast

Morning and afternoon: Give the lagoon a substantial block of time. Koka Lagoon Cruises runs a glass-bottom boat tour on Muri Lagoon; its listing also describes snorkelling gear and cultural demonstrations. Where: Ngatangiia. Check the current tour length, departure and inclusions before booking.

Evening: If you want a casual seaside meal, Trader Jacks in Avarua has a broad menu including seafood and pizza, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options listed. Where: Avarua. If you prefer a quiet evening, eat near your accommodation instead; there is no need to add another organised activity after the water outing.

Day 3: Saturday in Avarua

Morning: Visit Punanga Nui Market. The official market page lists Saturday as the main market day, open 7 am to noon. Browse the local food and crafts; Cook Islands Tourism recommends arriving early for locally grown produce. Check the market’s current information and tourism market advice before you go.

Afternoon: Keep this flexible. If it fits the day’s confirmed schedule, return for a beach break or book the orientation tour if you did not take it on Day 1. For another seafood stop, The Mooring Fish Cafe is a seafood-focused café and takeaway in Ngatangiia. Where: Ngatangiia.

Evening: For a cultural dinner and performance, Over Water Night Show & Buffet Dinner is staged at Te Vara Nui in a garden setting, with music and dancing. Where: Ngatangiia. Check dates and availability before building the rest of the evening around it.

Day 4: Choose a mountain or water day

Morning: If you are prepared for a demanding walk, use this day for Rarotonga’s Cross-Island Track. Cook Islands Tourism describes the 6 km route as moderate to hard and gives an average time of 3 to 3.5 hours. Its guidance recommends starting in the north and heading south; check the official hiking advice, recent conditions and your own fitness before setting out. Leave the afternoon light.

Afternoon: If you would rather avoid a long walk, Turtle Sea Scooter Safari with Ariki Adventures is a guided sea-scooter and snorkelling activity in the lagoon. Where: Ngatangiia. Choose one or the other.

Evening: Rest, have dinner close to your base and prepare for the flight the next day.

Days 5–8: Aitutaki

Day 5: Fly to Aitutaki

Morning: Take the domestic flight from Rarotonga to Aitutaki. Cook Islands Tourism currently lists daily Air Rarotonga services and an average flight time of 50 minutes; check the flight information and the Air Rarotonga booking site for your actual departure and current timetable. Flight schedules can change, so leave enough time for check-in and transfers.

Afternoon: Check in, unpack and make the first day gentle. Flying Boat Beach Bar & Grill is a beachfront restaurant in Arutanga serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with seafood and other dishes in its listing. Where: Arutanga.

Evening: Walk by the lagoon or rest after the hop.

Day 6: Lagoon cruise

Morning and afternoon: Make this your main Aitutaki water day. Bishop’s Lagoon Cruises describes a six-hour cruise to One Foot Island, with snorkelling and an island lunch; the operator’s current cruise page lists a 10 am–4 pm full-day departure. Where: Arutanga. Confirm the route and conditions in advance.

Evening: Keep the evening flexible after a full day outside. Blue Lagoon Bar & Restaurant at Aitutaki Village sits by Ootu Point and serves lunch and dinner. Its current restaurant page lists Tuesday Island Nights with a buffet and cultural entertainment. Where: Arutanga. This sample places Day 6 on Tuesday, but confirm the event schedule and cruise return time before relying on it.

Day 7: A slower day on the lagoon

Morning: If you want another boat outing, Sail Aitutaki offers sailing, snorkelling and visits to motu including One Foot Island and Honeymoon Island. Where: Arutanga.

Afternoon: Or choose a smaller island-hopping or snorkelling outing with Aitutaki Adventures, which lists several tour formats. Where: Arutanga. Check which option is operating on your date and leave time for an unplanned swim or a rest.

Evening: For a special-occasion dinner, Rapae Bay Restaurant & Black Rock Bar in Amuri serves seafood and international dishes with lagoon views. Where: Amuri. If you would rather keep it casual, choose a nearby meal and enjoy a final sunset without another booking.

Day 8: Return flight

Fly back to Rarotonga after your third Aitutaki night and connect to your international flight. Book the domestic and international flights together, and leave a generous gap between them.

Keep the week workable

Plan one main activity a day, keep a wet-weather swap for the Cross-Island Track, and re-check tour and flight times before you go. The places here are starting points, not a package.
