Whale Watching in Rarotonga: When, Where and Tours

Every year, humpback whales travel thousands of kilometres from Antarctic feeding grounds to the warm waters of the Cook Islands to mate and give birth. Rarotonga is one of the easiest places to see them: the island drops steeply into deep water just past the reef, so whales often pass close to shore.

When to go

Humpbacks are in Cook Islands waters from about July to October, and sightings peak from August to October. Some years they arrive a little earlier, in June. The Cook Islands' waters are a whale sanctuary, so the whales are protected here.

What to expect

Watch the horizon for the spray of a blow, then a tail lifting out of the water, or a full breach. You might see a mother and calf resting near the surface or a group of males competing. On a boat or in the water you may even hear the males singing.

Where to watch from shore

Black Rock

On the northwest coast, Black Rock gives you height and a wide view of the ocean, which makes it easier to spot whales surfacing. Bring binoculars and a picnic.

Avarua and the north coast

The seafront along Avarua's main street and the harbour area look straight out to deep water, and whales are often seen just beyond the reef.

Aroa Beach

On the southwest coast, Aroa Beach is a good place to watch in the early morning or late afternoon while you enjoy a beach day.

Muri Lagoon

The whales stay outside the reef, in deep water, but from a kayak or paddleboard on Muri Lagoon you can watch for blows and breaches beyond the reef.

Raro Reef Sub

A semi-submersible boat with underwater windows that cruises the outer reef off Rarotonga's north coast. Turtles and reef fish are regular sights, and in whale season a whale sometimes comes right up to the windows. A good choice if you'd rather stay dry.

Rongohiva Watersports

Rongohiva runs small-group whale cruises from July to October, with commentary from local guides and snorkelling.

Koka Lagoon Cruises

Koka runs glass-bottom boat cruises on Muri Lagoon with snorkelling and a barbecue lunch. The boats stay inside the reef, so this is a lagoon day with a chance of seeing whales offshore rather than a dedicated whale tour. Great for families.
