Cook Islands Blog (cookislandsblog.com) is an independent travel guide to places to stay, eat and explore in the Cook Islands. You can use every part of the site without an account. We only ask for an email address when you choose to email yourself a trip, subscribe to our newsletter or want a reply to a report, and we never ask for payment details.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how many people visit, which pages they read and how they found us, so we can improve the guide. It runs only on www.cookislandsblog.com.
Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_E03TX72578) and records the pages you
view, the site that sent you, your device and browser type and your approximate location (country and city). Searches you run on the site
appear in page addresses, so they are recorded too. Google says Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. We do not use the data to
identify you, and we do not use advertising or remarketing features.
Google processes this data under its own terms; see how Google uses information from sites that use its services. To opt out, block cookies for this site in your browser or install the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
Trips you save
When you save a place to My trip or add a note, it is stored in this browser (local storage). Your trip and notes are never sent to us. When you save a place, Google Analytics records that the place was saved (which place, not who saved it), which helps us rank popular places. Clear your trip at any time with the Clear button on the My trip page or by clearing this site's data in your browser. A shared trip link contains only the places in the trip, never your notes.
Emailing yourself a trip
If you use Email me this trip, we send one email listing your saved places (not your notes) to the address you enter. We don't add that address to any mailing list. The site itself stores only a one-way code made from it, for 30 days, so we can limit how many emails one address gets in a day; our email provider's delivery records (below) do include the address.
Newsletter
If you subscribe, we store your email address, when you signed up and which form you used. We first send an email asking you to confirm; until you do, you won't get anything else, and unconfirmed signups are deleted after 30 days. Once confirmed, we email new guides and places now and then. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing deletes your address from our list straight away.
We send email through Resend, which delivers it on our behalf (Resend privacy policy). Resend keeps delivery records (the address, the time, and whether the email was delivered, bounced or marked as spam) and reports them back to us; we use them only to keep our sending healthy, for example to stop emailing an address that bounces. The forms use the same Cloudflare Turnstile spam check and short-lived IP rate limit as Report a change, below. Google Analytics records that a form was used, never the address.
Your location
If you tap Near me on a map, your browser asks for permission to share your location. Your location is used only on your device to centre the map and show nearby places. It is never sent to us or stored.
Reporting a change to a listing
If you use Report a change on a listing, we store what you tell us (the place, what changed and your note) so we can check it and update the page. Your email is optional and used only to reply to that report. We don't publish reports or add you to any mailing list. To stop spam, Cloudflare Turnstile checks the form and may process your IP address and browser details for that check (Turnstile privacy policy); we use your IP address briefly to limit how many reports can be sent at once, and we never store it. We delete reports, including any email address, within 12 months of handling them. Ask us to delete yours sooner at any time.
Hosting
The site is served by Cloudflare. As with any website, delivering a page means Cloudflare processes your IP address and basic request details such as the page and your browser, and it uses them to keep the site fast and protected from abuse. See Cloudflare's privacy policy. The map, photos and fonts all load from our own site, not from other companies.
Links to other websites
Listings link to businesses' own websites, social media pages, booking sites and Google Maps directions. Those sites have their own privacy policies, which apply once you leave Cook Islands Blog.
Children
The site is a general travel guide and is not aimed at children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle data, we will update this page and the date at the top.
